The Effects of Handicraft Activities on the Dominant Hand Function in the Elderly at Nursing Homes: A Pilot Study

Abstract

|
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to observe whether handicraft activities have an impact on the improvement of dominant hand lateral prehension strength, writing, handling of small objects, feeding and Stacking of Checkers in the elderly individuals living in nursing homes.
Methods: This study was conducted with a sample group of 4 elderly individuals residing at a nursing home in the study group participated in handicrafts programs over the course of 10 weeks.
Results: After treatment intervention, there was an improvement in lateral prehension strength, writing, feeding, stacking of checkers and handling of small objects.
Conclusion: The results of this study demonstrate that implementing a handicrafts programs can be an effective treatment method to improve dominant hand lateral prehension strength and dexterity in elderly individuals living in nursing homes.
